Ownership and tenancy records
Property matters can take a long time to resolve when papers cannot be found. Make a list of each property and the key records connected to it.
- Included: Sale deed, title documents or allotment letters
- Included: Property tax receipts and utility connection details
- Included: Society or association share certificates and maintenance records
- Included: Home loan documents and any no-objection or closure letters
- Included: Rental or lease agreements, as a landlord or a tenant
- Included: Details of jointly owned property and the co-owners
Wills and other legal papers
If you have made a will, the most important practical step is that a trusted person knows it exists and where the original is kept. Our Sandook can store a note about its location, but it is not a will and cannot replace one.
Requirements for wills, succession and powers of attorney depend on your circumstances and applicable law. Please speak to a qualified lawyer for advice about your own situation.
- Included: Whether you have a will, and where the original is kept
- Included: The name of any lawyer who helped prepare it
- Included: Any power of attorney you have granted or hold
- Included: Court orders, trust deeds or partnership agreements that affect your family
Review after life changes
Marriage, divorce, a birth, a property sale or a move to another city are all good moments to review this list and speak to an adviser about whether anything needs updating.
